What is Tomato-Mustard Fish ?
It is a bengali style fish curry , prepared with mustard and tomatoes. This curry is easy to make with a little twist to regular mustard fish. Fish like rohu, katla, pabda, hilsa etc. can be prepared with this gravy.
Ingredients
- Fish steaks – 4-5
- Turmeric powder – 1/2 tsp
- Tomatoes – 1 large
- Green chilies – 3-5
- Powdered Mustard seeds – 4 tbsp
- Mustard oiln
- Nigella seeds or kalonji – 1 tsp
- Salt to taste
- Water as needed
Instructions
Marinate the fish pieces with turmeric powder and salt. And keep aside for about 15-20 minutes.
Powder yellow mustard seeds to yield the required amount for curry as per recipe.
Blend tomatoes, 2/3 green chilies, powdered mustard, salt and half cup of water to a smooth paste. Keep aside.
Heat the oil in a kadai or pan and fry the fish pieces to the golden brown color. Keep aside.
Add nigella seeds to the remaining oil and let it sizzle for about 10 sec. Add the tomato-mustard-chilli paste.
Cook until the excess water is evaporated and oil is released. This would take about 5-7 mins.
Add one cup of water, mix well and bring to a boil.
Add the fish to the mustard sauce and cook for a 5-7 minutes more.
Serve hot with steamed rice.
