What is Chola r Dal / Chana Dal ?
Chola r Dal / Chana Dal is a traditional Bengali dish prepared from Chana Dal, ghee, coconut and other spices and is best paired with luchi / Poori or steamed rice. This recipe has the perfect balance of sweet and savoury flavours, the right consistency and texture.

Ingredients
- Chola or chana dal (split chickpea) – 1 cup
- Coconut , shredded – 1/4 cup
- Ghee – 2-3 tbsp
- Cinnamon stick – 2 inch
- Cardamom – 4-5
- Cloves – 3-4
- Bay leaves
- Ginger paste – 1 tbsp
- Turmeric powder – 1 tsp
- Bengali garam masala powder – 1 tsp
- Salt to taste
- Sugar to tasteĀ
- Water
Instructions
Soak one cup of chana dal for about 30 minutes.
Drain and pressure cook the soaked chana dal along with 2 cup water and salt for about 1-2 whistles. The chana dal should be soft but not mushy. It should still retain the shape.
Meanwhile in a pan heat 2 tbsp of ghee on medium heat and add the whole spices and saute for 20-30 seconds.
Add ginger paste fry for another 30 seconds and then add shredded coconut , fry on medium heat until lightly browned.
Add the cooked dal.
Add turmeric powder , red chili powder , garam masala powder , salt and sugar , mix well. Add water if necessary.
Cover and cook for another 5 minutes.
Add 1 tbsp ghee on top. Serve hot with steamed rice or luchi / poori.
